Research background

HCG shares its α subunit with LH, FSH and TSH: the four glycoprotein hormones are distinguished solely by the β subunit. That common architecture is why they are studied together, and the β of HCG — the longest of the four, with a C-terminal extension of its own — is what explains why its signal at the same receptor as LH is far more prolonged.

The other defining feature is the sugar. Close to a third of its mass is carbohydrate chains, and that glycosylation is not decorative: it determines the circulating half-life and varies with the origin of the preparation. That is why HCG is not one molecule but a family of glycoforms, and why this page publishes neither a molecular formula nor an exact weight — the mass is around 37.9 kDa, but giving that as a closed figure would invent a precision that does not exist.

That is also where its unit of measure comes from. The potency of HCG is determined by bioassay against an international standard, not by weighing the vial, so it is expressed in international units (IU). It is the reason this product is the first in the catalogue not advertised in milligrams.

Reconstitution and handling

  • Work on a clean surface and disinfect the vial stopper with an alcohol wipe before piercing it.
  • Add the bacteriostatic water slowly, letting it run down the inner wall of the vial rather than landing on the powder.
  • Do not shake. Swirl the vial gently until the lyophilized powder has fully dissolved: vigorous agitation degrades the peptide.
  • The solution should come out clear. If it turns cloudy or shows suspended particles, do not use it.

Storage and stability

  • Before reconstitution: refrigerated between 2 and 8 °C, protected from light and moisture.
  • After reconstitution: in the fridge and away from light. In solution the peptide lasts far less than as a powder, so it is best used soon.
  • Avoid freeze-thaw cycles.
