Research background
SNAP-8 (acetyl octapeptide-3) reproduces, with two more amino acids, the N-terminal fragment of SNAP-25 on which acetyl hexapeptide-3 — better known by its trade name Argireline — is based. SNAP-25 is one of the three proteins of the SNARE complex, the machinery that brings vesicles up to the membrane so they release their contents.
The idea under investigation is that a fragment mimicking that end can compete with native SNAP-25 within the complex and so interfere with vesicle fusion. Its literature is cosmetic chemistry and in vitro work — it is a topical cosmetic ingredient studied for the attenuation of expression lines — with no clinical trials in the pharmacological sense. It is sold as a research reagent.
Reconstitution and handling
- Work on a clean surface and disinfect the vial stopper with an alcohol wipe before piercing it.
- Add the bacteriostatic water slowly, letting it run down the inner wall of the vial rather than landing on the powder.
- Do not shake. Swirl the vial gently until the lyophilized powder has fully dissolved: vigorous agitation degrades the peptide.
- The solution should come out clear. If it turns cloudy or shows suspended particles, do not use it.
