Research background

Semax is a heptapeptide derived from ACTH: it reproduces the 4-7 fragment of that hormone and adds a three amino acid tail (Pro-Gly-Pro) that protects it from peptidases. The fragment lacks the hormonal activity of full ACTH, which makes it possible to study its effects on the nervous system in isolation.

Research has centered on the expression of neurotrophic factors — BDNF and NGF above all — on neuroprotection in ischemia models, and on cognition. It matters where that literature comes from: the molecule was developed in Russia and most studies are published there, with little independent replication elsewhere.
